Supervisor: Dr Manos Tsakiris, Department of Psychology, Royal Holloway, University of London

Project Description:  A timely topic of interdisciplinary research in social cognitive neuroscience and philosophy of mind is the relation between self-consciousness and consciousness of other people. Understanding self-other relations is only possible if we address the role of other people in the constitution of self-consciousness: the way one experiences others - to understand them and/or to interact with them for building a shared world - cannot be addressed as if others did not participate to one's experience of oneself. The research project will investigate how inter-subjectivity participates to the constitution of self-consciousness, particularly in relation to the awareness of one's own body. The aim of this PhD project will be to investigate how interactions with others affect the experience of one's own body in sensation (e.g. sense of body-ownership) and action (e.g. sense of agency), using behavioral and neuroscientific techniques, in both normal and clinical populations.

This PhD position is part of a three-year research grant from the "European Platform for Life Sciences, Mind Sciences and Humanities", Volkswagen Foundation, Germany,  for a larger project that involves the collaboration between Dr Manos Tsakiris, Department of Psychology, Royal Holloway University of London,  Dr Doroth?e Legrand,  "Centre de Recherche en Epist?mologie Appliqu?e" (CREA), CNRS, Paris, France, and  Dr Simone Sch?tz-Bosbach,  Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive ad Brain Sciences, Leipzig, Germany.

The successful candidate will develop the core of the empirical research project at the Department of Psychology, Royal Holloway, University of London. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her own research ideas, to participate in the networking activities and to actively collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary European research team funded by the grant.

Funding Details: The studentship will cover Home/EU fees (? 3,600) and pay an annual tax-free stipend of approximately ?15,500 per annum for three years, and is available from September 2010. The studentships will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with appropriate qualification.
